Great Britain to beat Turkey
“This Davis Cup tie will finally produce a win for the British Davis Cup team unless something extraordinary happens. It is being played on grass at Devonshire Park in Eastourne and starts this Friday.
The British team is made up of Jamie Baker, ranked 253 and James Ward, ranked 301, as well as the top doubles team of Ken Skupski and Colin Fleming (ranked 46 and 47).
The Turkish team has 1 quality player in Marsel Ilhan (ranked 103). The other players in the team are Zorlu (#866) Altuna (#932) and Akkoyun (#1157). In doubles Ilhan is ranked 708 whilst the rest of his team are outside the top 1000
The huge advantage for the GB team is that they have good experience of grass court tennis and are familiar with the venue. For Turkey only Ilhan has ever played on grass so we can be almost certain that GB win 2 singles matches without too much trouble. However Turkish number 1 Ilhan will also be very confident of winning his 2 singles matches after qualifying for Wimbledon where he reached the 2nd round.
The Brits will have something to say about that however – Ward and Baker will both give Ilhan a run for his money. Ward will be especially confident after his recent wins against Lopez and Schuettler in Eastbourne. Baker’s also been in good form in recent months and will be sure of winning at least one match.
It is however quite likely that the tie will come down to the doubles match. Skupski and Fleming are regularly playing on the ATP tour against the best players in the world while Ilhan rarely plays doubles. Ilhan played with Akkoyun in their last Davis Cup doubles match where they lost to an unknown Irish pair in straight sets, winning only 7 games. The British pair have beaten the Bryan brothers before so it is inconceivable that they would lose this doubles match!
It would simply the biggest catastrophe to ever hit British Tennis if they were to lose this relegation play off. I’m extremely confident that this won’t happen however – mainly due to the weakness of the opposition.
If you’re lucky you may be able to get a price of 1.22+ on Betfair. It’s well worth backing as I’m particularly confident in this bet. In my opinion Turkey have less than 1% chance of winning.”
