England are set to begin their campaign for the Rugby World Cup with what looks like a tough match-up against Argentina. Having reached the three last World Cup Finals the pressure is on England to display dominant form. Expected to play their usual tight game, it will be crucial that England win their own line-outs and set pieces – as Argentina will take advantage of any weakness.
One of the largest sporting events in the world, the Rugby World Cup is held once every four years and is played out between the worlds top twenty men’s international rugby teams. There are two stages, a group and a knock-out – Competing Nations are divided into four pools, A through to D, of five nations each. We reported on this when it happened last year, but here is the link to our previous article, The Rugby World Cup Draw. The Nations play four pool games, playing their respective pool members once each – The winner (first position) and runner-up (second position) of each pool enter the knock-out stage. The knock-out stage consists of quarter- and semi-finals, and then the final. The winner of each pool is placed against a runner-up of a different pool in a quarter-final. The winner of each quarter-final goes on to the semi-finals, and the respective winners proceed to the final. Losers of the semi-finals contest for third place. Should a draw result during a match in the knock-out stages, the winner is determined through extra time. Should that fail, sudden death begins when the next team to score any points is declared the winner; as a last resort, a kicking competition is used.
