Queen Elizabeth II Stakes

Queen Elizabeth II Stakes

The Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot Racecourse takes place on Saturday 15th October 2011 and will be run on the straight mile course for the first time. This Group One Race has previously been run on the round course at Ascot, but after talking the idea through with a selection of trainers and jockeys, the decision was taken to move the race to the straight track.

“We consulted extensively on this with trainers and jockeys and while a few were keen to see the race stay on the old mile, the overwhelming majority favoured switching to the straight mile because it is likely to provide better going in mid-October,” explained Champions Series chief executive Rod Street.

As this running of the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes takes place later than the usual September date, the ground management team will strive to preserve the best possible surface, meaning they will be saving fresh strips of turf and have been limiting field sizes on the straight course to 16 from July 25 onwards.

The event is a sure thing to sell out entirely – with 30,000 racegoers expected to line the tracks, this is a very large crowd of people at Ascot to enjoy the days racing in what will be by far the richest raceday ever staged in this country. The bookmakers will see Millions Of Pounds change hands over the course of the day and the smart bettor can make a lot of money.

Sir Henry Cecil confirmed the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes as the next intended port of call for incredible Sussex Stakes winner Frankel. The 2000 Guineas and Royal Ascot winner stretched his unbeaten record to eight wins with a stunning display of form as he beat Canford Cliffs at Goodwood.

Side Glance will have his next start in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes. Andrew Balding’s four-year-old put in a great performance running in the Woodbine Mile, beaten by just over a length. He is likely to have to take the fight to Frankel however, as he is looking very dominant.

Dick Turpin is a strong Irish 4 year old and has been running well of late – with 9 wins under his collar so far the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes is the next target. Owner John Manley is now keen to take on Sir Henry Cecil’s brilliant unbeaten colt in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot on October 15.

The Queen Elizabeth II Stakes forms part of the Breeders Cup Challenge, which means the winner automatically earns a place in the mile at The Breeders Cup World Championship event at the historic Churchill Downs Racecourse in Louisville, Kentucky, USA on the 4th & 5th November. This race has a purse of $2 Million so as you can imagine the competition is fierce and every single horse is fighting tooth and nail for a shot at the big time.
