The season-ending AEGON Masters Tennis is one of the jewels in the crown of the ATP Champions Tour. the event is also the ATP Champions tour’s longest-running tournament. The AEGON Masters Tennis never fails to attract the biggest names and personalities on the ATP Champions Tour to play competitively in both singles and doubles.
In 2009, the event boasted legends Pat Rafter and Mark Philippoussis in its line-up for the first time. In 2010 Goran Ivanisevic finally won his first ever AEGON Masters Tennis title after five years on the ATP Champions Tour.
AEGON Masters Tennis: ATP Champions Tour
The ATP Champions Tour is a men’s tennis tour for former tennis professionals, who have since retired from mainstream professional tennis touring. The Tour brings together many of the greatest tennis players in history for nostalgic, competitive and entertaining tennis tournaments in cities in all five continents around the world.
For a player to be eligible for play on this tour, he must have been retired from the ATP World Tour for two years or more. Each player must have been either a world #1, a Grand Slam finalist, or a singles player in a winning Davis Cup team. Each event can also invite two players of its choice to take wild cards.
Former World No.1 Ivan Lendl will play in London for the first time since retiring from professional tennis in 1994 after signing up to compete at the AEGON Masters Tennis at the Royal Albert Hall, Lendl is confirmed not only to make his AEGON Masters Tennis debut, but also to face off against old adversary John McEnroe on the Friday evening session of the event, in what will be a special one-night celebration of The Wightman Cup.
