For a great day out you should really give Chepstow Racecourse a visit. You can’t beat the spectacle and colour of seeing racehorses and jockeys close up, the bustling activity that surrounds the betting and the lively excitement of the race itself.
Set in Monmouthshire, Wales, adjoining the border with Gloucestershire, England. It is located on the River Wye, close to its confluence with the River Severn, and close to the western end of the Severn Bridge on the M48 motorway. It is 16 miles east of Newport and 124 miles west of London.
Chepstow racecourse is left-handed, galloping track containing severe undulations. Wales’ other racecourse home to the Welsh National. Chepstow is one of the most testing racetracks in the country, especially when the ground is changing, which brings stamina into play at all distances.
The three and three-quarter mile race, known as the Coral Welsh National, owes much to the support of the bookmaking firm for establishing it as one of the major events in the National Hunt calendar. Among the winners have been Stearsby, Run and Skip, Righthand Man, and, in the 1983-84 season, Burrough Hill Lad, who went on to complete the big double by landing the Tote Cheltenham Gold Cup less than three months later.A bright and warm racecourse, Chepstow is sure to amaze and delight and with the range of facilities on offer, which we come onto next – you’ll struggle to leave when the racing is done.

The Chepstow Racecourse is undulating and stamina-sapping course where stamina is vital especially as the Coral Welsh National is always run on a bog in the depths of winter. The final five fences in the straight are relatively close together and demand precise, accurate jumping particularly the final open ditch and the uphill run to the line requires competitors to stay every yard of the trip.
A handicap chase of three miles and about five and a half furlongs, the Welsh National has crowned some world renowned horses and is a serious highlight to the racing year.
