The course is a left-handed circuit of about one and a half miles with a short uphill climb on the approach to the finishing straight and a run-in of 250 yards. Hexham is a National Hunt course with ten fences for the steeplechasers to negotiate. Its principal race is the Heart of All England Hunter Chase.
Voted “Best Small Racecourse in Scotland and North East England” at the 2010 Racegoers Club awards Hexham has a small and friendly atmosphere bringing a touch of community back to the world of horse racing. On course catering is provided by Ramside Event Catering, one of the largest privately owned prestigious catering companies in the North East of England.
The pavilion restaurant offers a wide range of options to suit all tastes and is an ideal way to spend some time between races, you will find a sumptuous menu and some first rate wines on offer here, and booking is advisable on the busier racedays.
Turn into Hexham at the main roundabout on A69 Newcastle to Carlisle trunk road. Cross the river bridge, straight over the roundabout, then over the railway bridge and immediately turn left at the mini roundabout. Pass the Railway Station on the left and then an Esso Garage following the road up to the main Hexham thoroughfare. Turn right at the mini-roundabout and pass the County Hotel on the left. You’ll shortly pass the bus station on the left and a Lloyds Bank on the right. Take the next turning on the left between a chemist and the Tap and Spile public house. This is Eastgate. Go up Eastgate for about 400 yards where the road forks. Take the right fork (Dipton Mill Road) and climb steep hill until just reaching the brow (about ½ mile). Turn right here and straight ahead until reaching racecourse on the left (about ½ mile).
