Horse Racing At Salisbury Racecourse

There is a choice of three enclosures at Salisbury Racecourse – Bibury Enclosure, Grandstand & Paddock Enclosure, and Course Enclosure. The range of facilities available and the areas that can be accessed vary according to each enclosure and that is reflected in the enclosure price.

Each enclosure will have guaranteed race viewing; betting facilities; nearby car parking; racecard selling points; bars and catering outlets – The Big TV Screen, which is a popular feature at the racecourse, is viewable from all enclosures.

Bibury Enclosure

This was formerly known as ‘Members’. It has the widest choice of facilities available and is closest to the winning line for race viewing. There are two viewing Stands in the Bibury Enclosure, one of which has a seated area with 288 seats.

Racegoers in this enclosure can view the horses in the Parade Ring before each race and the Winners’ Enclosure afterwards. They can also freely visit both other enclosures at the racecourse, particularly the Course Enclosure on days that children’s entertainments are provided.

The Bars in this enclosure are the main Bibury Bar which is on the first floor of the Bibury Suite. This bar also has a balcony over-looking the winning line. Other bars are the Wessex Bar and Persian Punch Bar located on the ground floor of the Bibury Suite, and the Paddock Bar located by the Parade Ring. Each of these bars have an enclosed area for drinks to be taken outside. The Lester Piggott Bar is an open terraced bar at the top of the Wiltshire Stand (cream coloured building just after the winning line), and can be accessed up the metal staircase at the parade ring end of the building. This bar has fabulous views of the racecourse and parade ring.

There is an excellent coffee bar called ‘Coffee Mocha’ on the ground floor of the Wiltshire Stand near the parade ring.

Food is available in most of the Bars, but if a sit down meal is required, in more comfortable surroundings, the Moonraker or adjacent Conservatory Restaurant should be considered.

Grandstand & Paddock Enclosure

This was formerly known as ‘Tattersalls’. Visitors to the Grandstand & Paddock Enclosure can view the horses in the Parade Ring before each race, and in the Winners’ Enclosure afterwards. They can also visit the Course Enclosure (particularly to make use of any children’s entertainments)

The Bars that can be accessed in this enclosure are the main Tattersalls Bar, located underneath the twin level Stand which is next to the bookmakers. Other bars include the Paddock Bar which is located by the Parade Ring and which has an enclosed area for drinks to be taken outside and the Lester Piggott Bar at the top of the Wiltshire Stand. These two bars are shared with racegoers from the Bibury Enclosure. On busier racedays, a beer tent is erected near the betting ring.

A good choice of food is available in the main Tattersalls Bar, and there are always mobile catering units near the betting ring. There is also an excellent coffee bar called ‘Coffee Mocha’ on the ground floor of the Wiltshire Stand near the parade ring.

Course Enclosure

Customers in the Course Enclosure are able to get a good view of the racing and experience the atmosphere, however, they are not able to view the horses in the Parade Ring or Winners’ Enclosure. The facilities available are more limited than the other two enclosures, however, the Sarum Bar which is located underneath the viewing Stand, allows purchase of beers, soft drinks and some more popular spirits.

Food is available from mobile catering units within the enclosure.

Salisbury Racecourse Directions

Salisbury Racecourse is situated at the top of the hill between the villages of Netherhampton and Stratford Tony, about 4 miles west of Salisbury. Wilton is about 2 miles away. The postcode of the racecourse is SP2 8PN for satellite navigation.

From London, take the M3 and join the A303 westbound, just after Basingstoke. There are three different roads off the A303 that lead down to Salisbury – the A338, the A345 and the A360. The last mentioned is joined about 1 mile after passing Stonehenge. This route is slightly longer in distance but it avoids going through Salisbury which can be slow at times. However, please note that the A303 can be extremely busy on Friday afternoons, with holiday traffic heading west, so one of the other routes (A338 or A345) are likely to be better ways to the course on Fridays.

Once on the A360 proceed for about 5 miles and turn right where it is signed Wilton, HQ Land Forces and Park & Ride. Go over the mini-roundabout outside HQ Land Forces and go down the hill to another roundabout. Turn left at that roundabout. Brown tourism signs to the racecourse can be used from there on.

If the A338 or A345 route has been taken – look out for the brown tourism sign which gives the appropriate route as you approach the City’s ring road. It will say ‘For Salisbury Racecourse follow A36 Warminster’. Please note this sign is just appropriate for drivers who have come down the A338 or A345.

From Southampton, take the A36 northbound and follow the brown tourism signs as you approach Salisbury.

From the West, come off the A303 at Deptford and take the A36 southbound towards Wilton and Salisbury, and then follow the brown tourism signs.

Salisbury Racecourse Dress Code

There is a ‘Smart Casual’ code for racegoers in the Bibury Enclosure. Smart jeans only – no ripped, torn or frayed denim. No shorts, sportswear or trainers. Collared shirts and trousers for gentlemen, but ties are not essential. Grandstand & Paddock and the Course Enclosures are a little more relaxed and we would advise that you dress according to the weather.

Make every day a winner! :)
