One of the country’s friendliest racecourses, with a reputation for a warm, relaxed atmosphere and set in the beautiful Durham countryside, Sedgefield Racecourse provides a peaceful and tranquil setting. The facilities are wonderful for one of Britain’s smaller courses, ensuring Sedgefield retains much of its old charm and character.
A very popular National Hunt Course for Jump Racing – Steeple Chasing and Hurdle Racing – with some Flat races restricted to horses progressing to jumping hurdles and/or fences. The Course is a left handed circuit of 1mile 2furlongs round. The Steeple Chase fences are on the inside with the Hurdles on the outside. The track is undulating with quite an up-hill pull to Sands Farm and the cross fence, half a mile from home.
|
There are eight fences (height 4’6” and 6 feet wide) made with silver birch – four in the back straight, two in the straight – one of these is the Open Ditch as the 2nd last fence which is jumped at least twice in every race, two as cross fences at each end of the course – one by the roadside and one – The Paxtons Cross Fence – by Sands Farm. There is no water jump on the course, it was removed over 12 years ago. The fences are in permanent locations although the Johnny Ridley Fence, the last, is made of portable sections. Five padded ash hurdles (approx 3’6” high) per circuit and eight in a 2m1f race. Two in the home straight and two in the back straight with one by the roadside fence on the eastern side of the track. Hurdle positions vary between meetings to reduce the wear and the tear as there are more runners in hurdle races and also more races on the hurdle track through the year. |
